Frequently Asked Questions

My machines do not automatically turn on? Why?
Your machines need to be configured to do this. You need to go into the BIOS on each machine, where you will find a setting such as "Wake on Lan" - this needs to be enabled. When enabled, the lights on the network port at the back of your machine should stay on even when the machine is switched off.
My machines won't shut down?
To make shutting your machines down faster, SmartPowerSave first "pings" them, and when a reply is received the shutdown command is sent. If the IP address of the machine has changed, SmartPowerSave may not shut them down correctly. From the tools menu, please click "Update Ip's". This will solve your problem.
The list of machines currently switched on is not accurate.
SmartPowerSave can check if your machines are on in two ways - either by IP Address or by determining if the machine is visible in Network Neighbourhood. These options are available on the setup screen. "By IP" is the most accurate method, although it is slower. "Network Neighborhood" is the fasted method, but is less accurate as a machine can be visible in network neighborhood sometime after it has actually been switched off.
The scheduler is not working properly, it doesn't seem to save?
SmartPowerSave relies on the "Scheduled Tasks" function of your server. Sometimes this does not update. Please open your scheduled tasks via your server's control panel, delete the tasks named "S1" and "S2", then open SmartpowerSave and save the schedule again - making sure you enter a valid administrator username and password.
I have multiple networks; do I need to purchase more than one license?
Yes, you need a license for each network you operate. And the software needs to be installed on the subnet of the network it is controlling.
I have some machines on a remote site, the software doesn't seem to be able to control them?
Your Router is blocking the broadcast address of your network, which our software uses to send commands to your pcs. You will need to install the software on a server local to the machines you wish to control.
I have some Windows 7 machines, SmartPowerSave does not seem to be able to control them?
By default, Windows 7 blocks ICMP echo requests. This option needs to be turned off. If you have more than a few Windows 7 machines, we recommend you use Active Directory Group Policy to configure them.
